The Venezuelan crisis has made it clear that the Trump administration has outsourced its South America policy to US Sen Marco Rubio. That’s a bad idea, even if you have a positive opinion of the Florida senator.
The latest Trump administration sanctions against 13 Venezuelan officials involved in human rights abuses, corruption or anti-democratic actions is a case in point. The sanctions, which included visa withdrawals and the freezing of US assets, had long been suggested by Rubio to the White House.
