A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Private is now recovering after he was struck by a motorcyclist on the Bath Settlement Public Road, West Coast Berbice, during a security operation early yesterday morning.
Although the Guyana Police Force had said that Brian Samuels, 22, was battling for his life after the accident, the GDF subsequently reported on its Facebook page that he was examined by doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital and no serious injuries were found.
As a result, the GDF said Samuels was discharged from the hospital and was resting comfortably at the Medical Centre in Base Camp Ayanganna.
The police had stated that Samuels, of Hope, East Coast Demerara, was first rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital after he was struck down around 1.30am.
At the time, he was part of a Joint Services party manning a roadblock as part of ‘Operation Clean Sweep.’ The police said the motorcyclist, identified as Ramraj, 65, of Fifth Street Alberttown, was proceeding east along the northern side of the road and allegedly breached the cordon and collided with the soldier, who was positioned on the northern side of the road. As a result of the impact, both fell onto the road. They were immediately rushed to the nearby Fort Wellington Hospital.
The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries and was admitted to the Fort Wellington Hospital, the police added.
