A 35-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the possession of several grammes of cannabis.
Derrick Persaud, a father of eight, of Brooms Estate, Mabaruma, was accused of having in his possession 75 grammes of cannabis, for trafficking, on July 29, at Aruka River.
Persaud denied the allegation after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore, objected to bail being granted, adding that Persaud’s attorney presented no special reasons to the court.
The prosecutor then told the court that on the day in question, the defendant, hired a boat that was transporting a quantity of food items, including limes and fuel. The boat was later intercepted by police and searched, which led to the discovery of transparent bags, which contained leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis and pears, amounting to 65 grammes. A further search was then conducted on Persaud and another 10 grammes of leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis were found in the left side of his trousers’ pocket.
Subsequent to the presentation of the prosecution’s brief facts, the Chief Magistrate remanded Persaud to prison on the grounds that no special reasons had been given to the court.
The matter will be called again on August 22 at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
