A homeless man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with stealing from a city school.
Norbert Baijnauth, 49, was accused of breaking and entering the Nehemiah Comprehensive School, between August 2nd and August 3rd, 2017, at Queenstown, and stealing three electric fans, a stabiliser and 10 small bottles of water, all valued at $42,000 in total.
Baijnauth denied the charge when he appeared before Georgetown Magistrate Leron Daly.
The accused, who told the court that he lives on the street, said he did not steal the items. Instead, he maintained that he recovered the fan and the stabiliser in a garbage bin.
Baijnauth, who admitted that he has spent time in prison for disorderly behaviour, also accused the police of trying to frame him.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh objected to the man being granted bail since he did not have a fixed address. As a result, Magistrate Daly remanded him to prison and adjourned the matter until August 18th.
