Dear Editor,
There can be no denying that a free media is essential to democracy in Guyana. A free media provides for the free flow of information and exchange of ideas. However, in Guyana it can be seen that the media have been conditioned in such a way that some outlets feels obligated to support the government and some to support the opposition.
A free media is important, but what is also essential is an impartial media. An impartial media does not in any way feel obligated to support the efforts of the government or opposition. It will hold both accountable. After all, what is the use of a free media when self-censorship is practised?
Just as important as being free and impartial, the media should also seek to honestly communicate with society, building trust as it does so.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
