A man was yesterday fined $100,000, or a default sentence of six months imprisonment, after he was charged with fraudulently converting money from the sale of a car which he was not in a position to sell.
Ashton April, 29, of 181 Charlotte Street, Bourda, was read a charge which stated that between April 2016 and August 2017, at Go Slow Avenue, being entrusted by Kenson Garraway with motor vehicle PKK 5957, valued at $1,700,000, he fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.
According to the prosecution’s facts, on the day in question, the complainant handed over his vehicle to the accused for him to use and support himself and the complainant’s sister. The complainant later saw his vehicle being driven by someone he did not know. He then enquired from the accused about his vehicle and was told that the vehicle was at a mechanic. On August 14, the complainant enquired once again about the vehicle and he was told that the car was still at the mechanic. The complainant later made several phone calls to the accused but to no avail. The matter was subsequently reported to the East La Penitence Police Station and the accused was later arrested.
April entered a not guilty plea to the charge.
Magistrate Azore subsequently fined the accused $100,000 or a default sentence of six months imprisonment.
