Taxi driver gets four years for trafficking ganja

A taxi driver yesterday pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison and fined $1.2 million for trafficking five pounds of compressed cannabis.

Raymond Roberts, 40, of Kuru Kururu, East Bank Demerara, admitted to the charge, which stated that on, August 15, at Friendship Public Road, he had in his possession, five pounds of compressed cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The matter was read to Roberts in Court 10, by Magistrate Sunil Scarce.

According to the facts of the matter, police officers on mobile patrol intercepted Roberts’ car around 6.20 pm and conducted a search. During the search one of the officers stumbled across four taped parcels of compressed cannabis in a box which was positioned on the back seat of the vehicle.

Magistrate Scarce, after considering that Roberts did not waste the court’s time, however noted the seriousness of the offence, and imposed a sentence of four years, along with a fine of $1.2 million.
