The Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) held a ‘Back to School’ Drive and Fun day for the children of the Sophia Care Centre on August 12, 2017.
GAWL said in a release that it was previously a regular donor to the children of the Hadfield Drop in Centre but has since expanded its donations to include the children of Sophia as the Hadfield children are also being housed there since the deadly fire of July 2016.
The release said that the items donated included flash drives, umbrellas, lunch towels, lunch bags, cardboard, markers, socks and other items of clothing for girls, sketch pads, clip boards, drawing books and geometry sets.
The donations were intended to meet some of the specific school needs for the new school term for the children aged 2 to 17.
As it continues to celebrate its 30th Anniversary, GAWL said it will be hosting a “Health and Law Fair” in collaboration with the Lions Club of Durban Park and will also soon launch an essay competition geared towards High School children and a mooting competition for University students.
