A labourer was yesterday granted bail after he was charged with assaulting his common-law wife.
Shawn Charles was accused of unlawfully assaulting Alexis Welcome on August 18, at East La Penitence Squatting Area, and caused actual bodily harm.
Charles, who appeared to be quite perplexed at the charge, pleaded not guilty after he was arraigned in a city court.
Prosecutor Adduni Inniss told the court that on the day in question, Charles and Welcome had an argument, which led to him lashing her about her body with a knife.
However, the prosecutor noted that Welcome’s medical certificate stated that she suffered abrasions to her forearm.
When granted the opportunity to speak, Charles told the court that he did not hit Welcome. “I ain’ hit she,” he insisted.
He was later granted $60,000 bail and the case was adjourned until August 23, when it will be called before Magistrate Dylon Bess in Court 6.
