West Coast Berbice firefighters were able to avert major damage at the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) substation at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice, where they put out a fire on Thursday night.
The Onverwagt Fire Station was alerted about the around 9. 50 pm on Thursday and promptly responded, thereby preventing major damage to equipment and infrastructure at the location.
GPL, in a statement issued yesterday, said that a failed connecting rod on the No. 5 Unit “punctured a block resulting in a fire” at 9.42 pm.
While no major losses were recorded, this publication was told that a GM 20 cylinder generator was damaged.
GPL said it is currently assessing the damages and an investigation will be conducted.
