The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) yesterday brought the curtains down on its 2017 Summer Youth Camp with a simple ceremony at the club’s pavilion.
Close to 100 youngsters spent the last 10 days being exposed to the fundamentals of the sport, both on and off the field, under the watchful eyes of the camp’s Technical Director, Coach Mark Harper.
Harper, at the closing ceremony, said that the initiative was geared at giving the youngers a better understanding of the game while also focusing on harnessing their skills.
He expressed a desire to continue such programmes in order to fast-track the development of the talent spotted at the camp.
“It is my hope that the interest will not dwindle after this activity. My wish would be to select a squad from this camp to have ongoing training over a period of time,” he declared.
Meanwhile, each participant received a certificate of participation as a show of appreciation for the interest shown.
The summer initiative, which has been running for close to a decade now, has produced players such as Ashmead Nedd, Qumar Torrington, Sachin Singh and Keemo Paul, all of whom have represented the West Indies at the youth level while the careers of Raymond Perez, Sherfane Rutherford, and Ronaldo Ali Mohamed have been impacted by the camp.
The ceremony was also attended by club president Patrick Harding along with vice-president of the club Roger Harper who is also the coach of the Guyana Amazon Warriors Team. Both men called the initiative a success.
The club thanked all the sponsors for their interest in developing the next generation of cricketers.
