A father of three is now dead while another person is critically injured after a car collided with a motorcycle along the Better Hope Public Road, East Coast Demerara on Sunday evening.
Dead is Cleon Perreira, a driver attached to the Guyana Power & Light Inc and a father of three of Lot 119 Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, who was on the motorcycle. He died on the spot.
A woman, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the car, is presently admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). She was identified only as “Penny,” a resident of Montrose.
The driver of the car, identified as Randy Singh, 19, of Montrose, allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the accident but was detained and handed over to the police. A breathalyser test revealed that he had no alcohol in his breath at the time of the accident. He is nonetheless presently in custody.
The accident occurred around 11.15 pm on Sunday.
The police, in a press release, said investigations revealed that the car, PMM 9206, was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the road when it suddenly turned north into the path of the motorcycle, CG 1872, which was proceeding in the opposite direction, resulting in a collision.
As a result, Perreira fell on to the road surface and sustained injuries. He was taken to the GPH, where
he was officially pronounced dead.
Perreira’s cousin, Thandeka Percival, told Stabroek News that at the time of his death he was heading home. She said a few hours prior to the accident, Perreira had dropped off his mother, who resides overseas, at the airport.
Percival said based on what the family was told, Perreira was among a group of his biker friends when the car turned without any indication. As a result, Perreira, who was in front of the group at the time, was hit.
