A city magistrate yesterday remanded a clothes vendor to prison after he was accused of having in his possession less than a pound of cannabis.
Mark Denny, of Kitty, is accused of being in possession of 102.4 grammes of cannabis for trafficking.
After the charge was read by Magistrate Judy Latchman, Denny pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that on the day in question the police conducted a raid on the defendant’s premises and found the drugs in a washing machine. When told of the crime, the accused, according to the prosecutor, admitted to ownership of the washing machine and the drugs.
Denny’s attorney, however, told the court a different story, alleging that the washing machine where the drugs were found, is used by different persons in the apartment. The attorney added that when the police found the drugs, someone said that the defendant was the last person to use the machine.
The accused was subsequently denied bail and remanded to prison.
He is expected to make his next court appearance on September 13, before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
