Dear Editor,
Please let me be one of the first to congratulate the West Indies on their astonishing win over England in the Test match at Headingley yesterday. Above all, this was a phenomenal game of cricket with the advantage swinging one way and then the other, at regular intervals, over the five days until the amazing climax under the floodlights with time running out. I doubt if Joe Root will ever make such a sporting declaration again.
This game proves that Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game and far superior to T20s and ODIs. The last five days will live in the memory for a long time after even the most exciting T20 has been forgotten.
I realise that there have been many false dawns for West Indies cricket during the last seventeen years, but maybe, just maybe, this match will reignite the spark under the long form of the game in the Caribbean and lead to improved performances in the future. Particular praise should be given to Kraig Brathwaite and Shai Hope whose two enormous partnerships seized control of the game from the English, but most of the other players made vital contributions too. West Indians should now be walking with a spring in their step at least until the next Test at Lord’s.
Yours faithfully,
Adam Frankowski
