East Bank, batting a second time on day one, ended the day on 20 – 1 in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Jaguars three – day league while being a run behind Georgetown as 22 wickets tumbled at Lusignan Community Centre Ground, yesterday.
The day began in sweltering heat with Georgetown winning the toss and inserting East Bank to bat. That decision proved to be the right call after East Bank were reduced to 25 for four in the 14th over with the seamers enjoying the early morning moisture and a pitch that kept consistently low.
West Indies under – 15 captain Sachin Singh (1) and Guyana under – 19 captain Ronaldo Ali – Mohammed (0) were part of the quartet dismissed as Paul Wintz, Qumar Torrington, Robin Bacchus and Joshua Wade all had a wicket apiece during the morning session.
West Indies middle order batsman Vishaul Singh and Sherfane Rutherford (19) then
attempted to rebuild the innings with a 32-run, sixth wicket partnership, carrying their side to 57 – 5 before leg spinner Steven Sankar removed the latter LBW.
East Bank found themselves in further trouble, a run later, when off-spinner Gajanand Suknanan, who surprisingly reaped good bounce, joined in the act by removing Corwin Austin (0) who was smartly caught at leg slip by Sankar.
Singh’s (32) resistance ended when he edged Suknanan to a waiting Bacchus at first slip on the stroke of lunch while Sankar struck remove Deonarine Seegobin (7) the over prior to leaving East Bank tottering at 77 – 8 to end an eventful first session.
They were eventually dismissed for 115 shortly after lunch as spinners Suknanan (3-24) and Sankar (3-38) combined to rip through the middle and lower order.
Georgetown in their first innings reached 76 – 3 at tea with Skipper Robin Bacchus on 42 and looking in fine touch.
Rutherford, however, sent down a nagging afternoon spell to cause the middle order plenty of headaches to snare 7 for 48, including the scalp of Bacchus LBW for 51 spanning 78 balls, inclusive seven fours and a six as his side was dismissed for 136 in 37 overs, earning a first innings lead of 21.
East Bank in their second turn at the crease, reached 20 – 2 after Wintz produced a daring afternoon spell to claim both wickets to fall. Sachin Singh (4) and Captain Vishaul Singh (6) are the not – out batsmen.
Meanwhile, Lower Corentyne ended day one on 63 for 3 against Essequibo at the Albion community centre ground, trailing by 211 runs. Essequibo was earlier dismissed for 274 with former national under – 19 batsman Ricardo Adams smashing an unbeaten 145 while receiving support from Kemol Savory who made 62 as Seamer Raul Johnson bagged 5 – 70.
