Stokes pulled from renewing T20 rivalry with Brathwaite

LONDON, CMC – All-rounder Ben Stokes has been rested for the solitary Twenty20 International against West Indies later this month, scuppering the anticipated renewed rivalry with West Indies star Carlos Brathwaite.

The pair locked horns in the final of the Twenty20 World Cup in India last year April, when Brathwaite clobbered four successive sixes off the right-arm seamer in the final over to propel West Indies to a dramatic capture of the title.

The contest at Chester-le-Street on September 16 will be the first meeting of the two sides since that final.

Off-spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali has also been rested for the contest.

However, both he and Stokes have been included in the One-Day International squad, which will clash with the Windies in five matches starting September 19 at Old Trafford.

Opener Jason Roy, dropped for England’s Champions Trophy final against Pakistan back in June, has been recalled for the series. His last eight innings have yielded just 51 runs.

Flashback! Marlon Samuels and Carlos Brathwaite, right, celebrate the West Indies’ T20 2016 World Cup win ove England after Brathwaite had struck England’s Ben Stokes left, for four consecutive sixes.

Both limited overs squads will be led as usual by Eoin Morgan and include Test skipper Joe Root.

West Indies will also play matches at Trent Bridge on September 21, at Bristol three days later before wrapping up the series with fixtures at the Oval on September 27 and at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton two days later.
