The police constable who was involved in an accident along the Stewartville Public Road, West Coast Demerara, where a pedestrian was injured, was yesterday fined $7,500 after he admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Satrohan Gowkarran, 24, a resident of Vreed-en-Hoop, appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge. He was fined and his driver’s licence was suspended.
Gowkarran, who is stationed in ‘A’ Division, was placed under close arrest last Friday night after he struck down and injured pedestrian Quinton Anderson. The accident occurred around 10.40pm.
Anderson, 49, of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, sustained a fractured left foot. He remains a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital in a stable condition.
At that time of the accident, Gowkarran was off-duty.
The police, in a statement, had said investigations revealed that Gowkarran was proceeding in a car, HC 2850, along the northern carriageway of the road when Anderson allegedly crossed into the path of the vehicle and was hit.
A breathalyser test following the accident revealed that Gowkarran’s breath alcohol content was above the legal limit.
