Leaders Essequibo held a slight advantage over Georgetown at the end of day one of their fourth-round clash of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Jaguars three-day Franchise League tournament played at the Tuschen Sports Club ground, yesterday.
Georgetown, batting a second time, ended the day on 13 without loss, trailing Essequibo by 40 runs.
Earlier, Georgetown, batting first, were bundled out for 117 in 39 overs with opener Robin Bacchus getting another start to post 34 while Steven Sankar made 22 in a lower order effort.
Skipper Anthony Adams was once again the man to do the damage with the ball capturing 4 – 33 while receiving support from Keemo Paul (3-29) and Ricardo Adams (3-38).
Essequibo, in their turn at the crease were dismissed for 170 in the 52nd over of their innings with Ricardo Adams returning to score 43 as Paul (42) also capped an impressive all-around performance on day one. Kemol Savory chipped in with 33. Off-spinner Gajnanan Suknanan was the chief destroyer grabbing 6 – 27 for the City side.
At Young Warriors, East Bank ended the day on 132 for 8, trailing Lower Corentyne by 16 runs. Earlier, Lower Corentyne were dismissed for 148 in 54.5 overs with national U19 batsman Kevlon Anderson being the main contributor with 44 from 98 deliveries as seamer Sherfane Rutherford (4-39) and off-spinner Darshan Persaud (4-30) combined to produce a solid bowling effort for East Bank.
Meanwhile, Upper Corentyne ended day one on 267 – 7 in their encounter against West Demerara at Port Mourant. National wicket-keeper/batsman Anthony Bramble made 62 while opener Kandasammy Surujnarine made 63. Rajiv Ivan supported with 47. East Coast was in a spot of bother with the score on 134 – 8 up to press time in their encounter against West Berbice at Bush Lot. Play resumes at 9:30 hours across all venues today.
