Dear Editor,
There seem to be some Guyanese who want to continually blame Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham for Guyana’s present problems. Forbes Burnham and Cheddi Jagan have done a lot for Guyanese. They fought to make us into an independent nation. It is time for us to take responsibility for our current problems rather than blaming the past generations.
We all need to acknowledge, whether we like it or not, that we are contributing to Guyana’s development in a positive and in a negative way. It is up to the current generation, ourselves, to chart a different course than that of previous generations.
We can start by ending racial voting. That is, by not choosing to vote for a party because we perceive them to be working in the best interest of our race/ethnicity. We need to choose to vote for political parties on their merits. That is, their policies, programmes and performance. Only by doing this can we get the politicians to govern in the best interest of all Guyanese rather than govern in the best interest of our own race/ethnicity.
As I said before, it is up to us to chart a different course than previous generations.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
