Almost two years after she is alleged to have fatally struck down a pedestrian, the trial of attorney Keisha Chase is set to begin.
It is alleged that on November 6, 2015, on Duncan Street, Georgetown, Chase caused the death of Julian Leitch by dangerous driving.
The accused was charged with the crime on March 3, 2016, however, since May 10 of the same year the proceedings have been stalled pending a move by Chase’s lawyers to the High Court to get the charge dismissed.
Attorneys Murseline Bacchus and Kim Kyte-John had argued that the decision to charge Chase, made by the Director of Public Prosecutions, was ill-advised and irrational. Since that time, the proceedings at the magistrate’s court had been regularly adjourned to await a decision in the High Court. However, when the matter was called before Magistrate Allan Wilson yesterday, a date was set for the commencement of the trial.
That date is October 30.
Leitch died at the Georgetown Public Hospital shortly after he was hit near the Survival Supermarket at Vlissengen Road and Duncan Street.
He sustained several injuries, including a fractured skull and a broken neck.
It was reported that Chase had rushed him to the hospital following the incident, but he died while receiving treatment.
