A Brazilian national is now dead after the excavator he was operating fell into a mining pit with him last Tuesday.
Stabroek News has learnt from police that 51-year-old Edvaldo Carvalho was working in the Iruma Backdam, North West District, last Tuesday, when the accident occurred. Carvalho, an excavator operator, was reportedly cleaning the overburden in order to prepare a maiden pit to commence mining works when his excavator fell into the pit, trapping him.
According to a police source, the man was discovered hours later by one of his workmates under the tracks of the exactor with his skull crushed. He was reportedly working for another Brazilian national.
The police are still investigating the incident.
When the Department of Labour of the Ministry of Social Protection was contacted yesterday, an official related that an investigation has not yet been launched into the mining death.
