Dear Editor,
At the end of Education Month and Child Protection Week 2017, it is not easy to read of the death of six year old Glenshaun Skeete of Plaisance. There are going to be questions about the structures and the suitability of the ground and all of our structures which the state uses to house children. Antonio and Joshua George died in a fire while in the care of the state.
There is a report too that a teacher had said that the children who did not run would be beaten. The beating of children, and the threats to beat children, are indictments of all of the activities in Education Month and Child Protection Week which do not seem to deal with the abuse by the state.
There is no “Promotion of wellness in communities through quality education” as long as the Ministry of Education endorses the beating of children and the threatening of children with violence in our schools.
Yours faithfully,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
