A pedal cyclist succumbed while being transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday, after he collided with by a minibus on the Perth Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Police last evening identified the dead man as Mahendra Dyal, 42, of Perth Village.
According to a police statement, the fatal accident occurred around 9.15 am, when Dyal was struck by a minibus, BWW 2943, which was driven by a 27-year-old Richmond, Essequibo Coast resident.
Police said their investigations have revealed that the bus was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway, allegedly at a fast rate, when it collided with Dyal, who was proceeding in the opposite direction. It is alleged that Dyal swerved from behind a moving vehicle into the path of the bus. As a result of the impact, the police said Dyal, who received severe injuries, was rushed to the Suddie Hospital, where he was treated. He was then referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital but succumbed during the transfer.
The minibus driver, police noted, is in custody. A breathalyser test was administered to him but no alcohol was detected in his breath.
