I enjoyed reading your editorial (Saturday, September 30, 2017) captioned ‘The future of democracy.’
The editorial touched on an interesting point, namely, the rise of populist politics in which politicians seize the moment, not because they have anything better to offer but because they were able to correctly define the political moment and capitalize on perceived shortcomings by the political establishment.
Donald Trump will go down in history as one of the most unorthodox if not maverick presidents of the United States. His ‘hire and fire’ style of governance has gone beyond the walls of the Trump empire and has permeated the corridors of Capitol Hill.
I believe that something is fundamentally wrong when someone who won close to three million votes in the popular vote over her political rival cannot make it to the White House. The current system of electing a president on the basis of the College of Electors formula as opposed to the popular vote has become dysfunctional and should be revisited.
America meanwhile is at the crossroads. The entire world is watching on. Indeed, the very future of humanity is at stake.
