A policeman attached to the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) was yesterday charged with stealing a pistol and 10 live rounds ammunition.
Kevon Johnson, 21, stood in the courtroom of Georgetown Magistrate Judy Latchman, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge read against him.
It is alleged that on August 27, at TSU Headquarters, Eve Leary, he stole a 9 mm pistol, valued at $375,000, and 10 live rounds of ammunition, valued at $1,650.
Police prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that police ranks, acting on information, went to the Den Amsel Old Road, where they saw four persons, including Johnson, standing under a shed. A search was then conducted on the quartet, Gonsalves added, and the weapon and ammunition were found in Johnson’s crotch. Johnson was then question about the discovery and reportedly stated that he found the gun and ammo in a cupboard at the TSU.
Attorney Melvin Duke, who represented Johnson, told the court that his client never stole anything and as a result the charge against him was incorrect.
Magistrate Judy Latchman later granted Johnson his release on $200,000 bail and adjourned the matter until October 27, when it will be heard by Magistrate Leron Daly.
