Dear Editor,
The Mayor and Town Council in the municipality of Lethem, central Rupununi, in Region Nine, have shifted their work mode into top gear, as preparations continue for the Lethem Town Week celebrations, scheduled for the 15th-21st of October, 2017. A special task force, headed by private contractor Mr Ramesh Barker was charged with ensuring that works are executed with precision and within the time-frame.
Over forty-eight booths will be constructed to accommodate various businesses and service organisations during the one week celebrations. Already in place are certain structures which will be unveiled by President David Granger, on Friday 20th October, at a special ceremony to officially declare Lethem a town. There will also be a cultural presentation, fireworks and paratroop display by members of the GDF Special Forces Unit. Also on site are the steel frames to be assembled on a prefabricated stage, which will accommodate a packed programe of cultural activities. These will showcase Rupununi’s rich cultural diversity, including the Miss Lethem town week pageant; a gospel concert and Lethem’s Got Talent show, among other items.
Apart from the entertainment component of the Lethem Town Week celebrations, a temporary arch is to be erected and a number of street lights will be put in place. Additional police ranks are to be posted from Georgetown to boost security for the occasion.
Some of the highlights expected to thrill the crowds will be the ten-kilometre road race, fitness walk and the roast-off cooking competition.
Yours faithfully,
Mark Anthony Rodrigues
