Four men were last week charged with the murder of Industry handyman Hitram Ramchand.
Kumar Jettoo, a manager; Robin Ramlogan, 26, a mechanic; Patrick Gobin, 38, a carpenter of South East Cumming’s Lodge and Avikar Suraj, 24, a welder, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.
They were charged jointly with murdering Ramchand, 39 on September 30, at Industry.
The quartet was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until November 28.
Ramchand, a resident of Lot 51 Industry Crown Dam, succumbed to his injuries on October 1, just over a day and a half after he was allegedly beaten by a gang of men. The beating had occurred while Ramchand was returning home from a wake.
A post-mortem examination had revealed that he died as a result of a brain haemorrhage due to multiple blunt trauma.
Ramchand was reportedly attacked by a group of six men, who dealt him several lashes about his body. He was struck mostly to the head. He succumbed to his injuries around 7 pm on October 1 at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), while receiving medical attention.
A source had told Stabroek News that the row stemmed from gambling as “there was some disagreement as to who would have won and who owe who and a disagreement erupted followed by a fight.”
Ramchand’s family accused the police of bearing some responsibility for his death since he was placed in the police lock-up without medical attention.
