It was a disappointing day for team Guyana as the 2017 Indoor Pan American Cup continued yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
With the teams all playing for the chance of going to the 2018 World Cup, the atmosphere was full of excitement as the local ladies attempted to recover from the double defeat they suffered on the opening day at the hands of Uruguay and Argentina.
However, it was not to be as the local women were unable to get past the defending champs Canada, whose watertight defense proved difficult to penetrate and they tumbled to a 0-2 defeat.
Michelle Weber and Kathleen Leahy scored in the sixth and 15th minute respectively.
The Guyanese ladies will now oppose Barbados at 19:00hrs today, as they
Seek their first win in the tournament.
Meanwhile Guyana’s men’s team secured its first loss in the division going down 0-4 to neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago.
The Guyanese men were unable to duplicate their win from their opening match. The first half was intense with both teams playing at a fast clip, with many shots on goal. However, no one was able to score.
Aidan De Gannes was the first to score netting in the first five minutes of the second half. A mere two minutes later teammate Jordan Reynos doubled the lead. Despite the cheers of the supporters, the host team was unable to redeem themselves and Mickell Pierre (40th) and Jordan Vieira (40th) added to the score board within the last minute of the game to secure their win.
It was the first loss for the Guyanese men in their second group fixture.
The local men will tackle Mexico today at 17:45hrs.
