President David Granger is to swear in a Chairman of GECOM tonight, according to an advisory from the Ministry of the Presidency.
A decision was arrived at following a meeting between Granger and Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo today.
It comes after months of deadlock between the two over the choice. Stabroek News has been told that the person chosen is retired Justice James Patterson, 84. His name was not on the three lists submitted by Jagdeo. Sources say that Jagdeo did not agree with Patterson’s name and it would in effect mean that Granger has made a unilateral decision.
Jagdeo’s third list contained the name of former GECOM Chairman Joe Singh who has also chaired several inquiries for the Granger administration. His credentials for the post were irrefutable and his non-selection will deepen questions about the President’s choice.
Political analysts say the President’s decision is a reversal of the democratic process and will lead to bitter political divisions.
Patterson chaired the Commission of Inquiry into last year’s prison fire that killed 17 prisoners.
