A fire, which was set to a heap of grass just outside the northern fence of the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Community Centre Ground, briefly threatened to derail yesterday’s Diwali motorcade.
The fire which started around midday spread quickly and led to the collapse of a part of the fence.
A witness told Stabroek News that the fire spread quickly because of the dry grass on the field. Judging from the extent of the charring on the field, the fire was put out just before it got to the community centre.
The eyewitness noted that had the fire truck not arrived as soon as it did, the entire ground would have ended up in ruins. The quick response from the Guyana Fire Service saw the flames being put out before any massive destruction took place.
The ground is the conclusion point for the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s annual Diwali Motorcade, for which it was being prepared yesterday. When Stabroek News visited after midday yesterday, officials there were setting up for the event.
