Kerwin Jervis, who allegedly tried to set his wife on fire in their home a week ago, was yesterday charged.
Jervis, 45, was arraigned before Georgetown Magistrate Judy Latchman, who read the charge to him.
It is alleged that on October 17, at Georgetown, Jervis unlawfully and maliciously set fire to the dwelling house of June McCalmon-Jervis, with a person being therein.
Jervis, a machine operator, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that on the day in question, the complainant went home from work and met the defendant at home. Jervis, it is alleged, began to pour a liquid substance on to items and set them on fire. According to the prosecutor, he then locked both himself and his wife in the home.
Gonsalves objected to bail being granted, while telling the court that the accused is likely to be charged for another matter of a similar nature.
Subsequently, Magistrate Latchman remanded the accused to prison and adjourn-ed the matter to November 13.
On the day of the fire, McCalmon-Jervis was forced to jump out of a ground floor to escape.
