Guyanese opening batsman Trevon Griffith who will be turning out for the Jamaica Scorpions against Guyana in the opening round of the Cricket West Indies regional four – day tournament, says he’s not too worried about the lack of experience in the Jamaican side.
“In terms of first-class cricket, we have a few men who will be looking to make their debuts and some other guys haven’t played a lot of first-class cricket but some have been around and they should be accustomed to this level, “he said.
“It’s just a matter of going out there and sticking to what you [player] know and sticking to that as a batsman or a bowler,” Griffith added.
Griffith said that it will be important for the guys in the side to adapt to the conditions as quickly as possible if they are to compete against what is expected to be a barrage of left-arm spin on the low surface at Providence.
Their batsmen will have to contend with the slowness while seamer Jason Dawes and his unit may receive little assistance after the ball loses its shine.
Scorpions, however, who seem to be in rebuilding mode, have sought the services of another Guyanese in Assad Fudadin who is the most capped player in the side with 89 appearances.
Fudadin is expected to lead the batting, having intricate knowledge of both the conditions and the modus operandi of his former teammates.
On the account of his and Fudadin’s role in the side, apart from scoring runs, Griffith added: “Obviously we are from Guyana and we know a lot about the conditions and it’s just a matter of giving the guys a basic insight into the pitch and how it’s likely to play but I think these men have been coming to Guyana year in, year out but we are from here and we know it [conditions] more so it’s just a matter of sharing those little tips,” the Demerara Cricket Club player noted.
On a personal note, the left-hander indicated that he is quite excited to come up against his countrymen who have been doing well in recent times. His main objective, however, is to score runs for his team.
Griffith to date has only managed two fifties in 12 first-class appearances and should look to improve on those figures.
