Distance runners get ready, in excess of $1 million will be up for grabs when the ‘Oasis 5K Fun Run’ is staged on November 12 at the National Park.
These and other details were disclosed yesterday when the Guyana Beverage Inc. (GBI) and the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) officially launched the inaugural ‘Oasis 5K Fun Run’ at the company’s headquarters in Diamond.
During the launch, President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson disclosed that he was pleased to see the company has provided another avenue for the young athletes to develop their talents while being rewarded financially.
“It was like a dream come through for the Athletics Association of Guyana to start receiving calls from potential sponsors that would like to partner with us.” Hutson added “The AAG has been hard at work to develop the product of athletics in Guyana, to make the athletes marketable.
He then opined that athletics is currently at a stage where Corporate Guyana can partner with the association to advance the development of athletes even further.
“We see it as a worthy partner and we hope that the launch of this first event is not just the launch of Oasis Water 5K but an annual event that we can look forward to every year,” Hutson stated.
GBI’s Commercial Manager, Samuel Arjoon pointed out that sport is the perfect tool for the development of young people, their community and by extension the nation. “We know that sport is a big industry that can transform the country and we at Guyana Beverage Inc., we believe in the holistic development of people through sport and education.”
Arjoon added, “This is a perfect opportunity for us to partner with the athletics association through the Oasis brand to help develop our young athletes, to be exposed to more opportunity so, in time to come, they will be able to put Guyana and their sportsmen on the map”.
The sums of $35,000, $25,000 and $20,000 will go to the top three senior athletes for the event which gets underway at 15:30hrs. First to third-place Masters runners will pocket $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively while the juniors first, second and third place finishers will pocket $10,000 apiece. Fourth and fifth places will each run away with a $5,000 voucher.
Persons interested in registering can do so at the National Park or at the AAG’s office in Light Street, Alberttown. Registration closes on November 10.
