Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton and President of the Guyana Olympic Association, K Juman-Yassin making points yesterday at the AAG’s Coaching Conference. The event which was held at the GOA’s headquarters in Liliendaal was staged under the theme: Coaches: pivotal in the development of athletes

During the conference which was organized by the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) and attended by several coaches from across Guyana, Dr. Norton stated that coaches must have the greatest understanding of their role as primary individuals tasked with not only being effective teachers but also of ensuring the well-being of athletes. “Athletes perform exceptionally when they are not only physically but mentally prepared and coaches serve as some of the greatest motivators of athletes. Dr. Norton pointed out that the accomplishments of athletes are not limited solely to athletic performances but academic performances as well.

“You are partly responsible for ensuring that athletes are encouraged to excel in their studies as well since the two go hand-in-hand,” said the minister.

He noted that the theme for the conference ‘Coaches: pivotal in the development of athletes’ could not be more fitting since, as he put it, “Coaches play an important role in ensuring that the country produces athletes who perform exceedingly well at the international level.”

Meanwhile, President of the GOA, K Juman-Yassin stated that the association will also work along with the AAG’s coaches in the best capacity they can so as to help to realize the goal of achieving the elusive gold medal in track and field at the Olympic Games.

Juman-Yassin also stated once again that he would like to see full-time Guyanese athletes and coaches. Both Dr. Norton and Juman-Yassin commended the AAG for having this course while stating that they look forward to seeing more success from our athletes.

Also discussed during the coaching seminar were qualifying standards. The dates for trials for international events were also discussed and agreed upon. The AAG is expected to roll out its calendar of activities for the 2018 season in the not too distant future.
