The driver who was involved in the accident that claimed the life of pedal cyclist Derrick Freeman last Friday afternoon has been released on station bail as the police await a post-mortem report.
The driver, Dennis Stewart, a resident of New Market Street, Georgetown, was placed on $100,000 station bail.
Stabroek News was told that the autopsy has been rescheduled for tomorrow, after which charges are likely to be laid against Stewart.
Freeman, 71, died on Friday afternoon after he was struck down by the vehicle being driven by Stewart, while attempting to cross the Cove and John, East Coast Demerara public road. He sustained mainly head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahaicony Hospital.
This newspaper was told that the vehicle that Stewart was driving at the time of the accident, GTT 4080, belongs to Minister of State Joseph Harmon
The driver is said to have told the police that after noticing Freeman attempting to ride cross the road, he applied brakes but it was too late and he collided with him.
Residents recalled hearing a loud impact and upon checking they saw Freeman’s body on the roadway.
From all indications, he was heading home when the accident occurred.
