A security guard was yesterday read a manslaughter charge after the fatal shooting of a Brazilian national last week.
Although police had said that Christopher Ambrose, 55, of 1324 La Parfaite Harmonie, was defending himself, he was charged before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday with unlawfully killing Raimar Batista De Sousa on October 24, at Seven Hour, Butterfly Backdam.
Ambrose was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.
According to attorney Latchmie Rahamat, Ambrose was acting in self-defence after the now deceased man attacked him. As a result, she requested that Ambrose be granted reasonable bail.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore made no objection to bail being granted but requested that Ambrose lodge his travel documents and report to the Bartica Police Station.
The Chief Magistrate later placed the accused on $500,000 bail and ordered that he report to the Sergeant-in-Charge at the Bartica Police Station.
The matter was then adjourned until November 16, when it will be heard at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
According to a press release issued by the police, De Sousa was shot once in his face during the confrontation.
Investigations had indicated that the deceased man and his wife, who operates a shop in the community, had a fight.
As a result, the police said the defendant intervened as a peacemaker and was allegedly rebuffed by De Sousa, who armed himself with a cutlass and attacked him. As a result, Ambrose shot him in the face.
