An autopsy has revealed that Derick Freeman, the cyclist who was last Friday struck down on the Cove and John Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), died as a result of multiple injuries.
A relative of Freeman confirmed the findings with Stabroek News after a post-mortem examination which was conducted yesterday morning.
Seventy-one-year-old Freeman, a resident of Lot 4 Cove and John Public Road, ECD died after he was struck down by motor vehicle, GTT 4080 driven by Dennis Stewart, a resident of New Market Street, Georgetown.
The vehicle belongs to Minister of State, Joseph Harmon.
Freeman sustained mainly head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahaicony Hospital.
Stewart was released on $100,000 station bail. He is likely to be charged soon.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the driver was proceeding west along the southern side of the pubic road, when Freeman, who was proceeding in the same direction, attempted to cross the road.
The driver is said to have told the police that after noticing Freeman attempting to ride across the road, he applied brakes but it was too late and he collided with him.
Residents recalled hearing a loud impact and upon checking they saw Freeman’s body on the roadway.
From all indications, he was heading home when the accident occurred.
