A 37 year old labourer was yesterday given six months community service for snatching a cellphone, as both the victim and accused pleaded with the court for leniency.
Simon Persaud appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer to a robbery charge which stated that on October 30th, Persaud grabbed a Samsung Galaxy J7 mobile phone from Adia Asgard, valued at $60,000
Persaud pleaded guilty with an explanation when he was read the charge. He stated, “I heard about this phone snatching thing and tried it because I was hungry and had nothing to eat. As soon as I snatched the phone and start run the police saw me and catch me.”
Persaud explained to the court and to the young lady that he has no family and that it’s his first time committing such an offence, as he pleaded with the court to be lenient with him. Asgard also asked Magistrate Azore for leniency with Persaud given his circumstances.
Magistrate Azore considered the pleas from both Persaud and Asgard and granted Persaud six months community service. He will also have to report to the officer in charge at Brickdam Police Station every Friday until the six months have elapsed.
