The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) yesterday said it is conducting an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the crash of an Air Services Limited, Britten-Norman Islander aircraft – bearing registration number 8R-GER, at the Chenapau airstrip.
The shuttle flight accident occurred at approximately 3.30 pm on Wednesday. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft was en route from Mahdia to Chenapau when a mechanical problem developed in a section of the wheel causing the aircraft to swerve off the runway upon landing. There are no reports of injuries or fatalities, however the carriage section of the aircraft was badly damaged, GCAA said.
Information into this accident will be provided when it becomes available.
Two fatal shuttle flight crashes had let to the GCAA suspending these flight for the implementation of safety procedures. Flights have since resumed.
