The ex-husband of Babita Sarjou and another man were today both committed to stand trial for her murder.
Anand Narine and Darrol Compton, who were both charged with the murder of Sarjou, were committed to stand trial by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge.
On October 16, Police Prosecutor Inspector Neville Jeffers had closed his case against the two accused and the Chief Magistrate subsequently found that a prima facie case was made out against them for the murder of Sarjou, which was allegedly committed on November 4, 2010.
When the PI resumed today, Narine’s attorney, Donald Trotman, highlighted to the court the contents of a report in the Guyana Chronicle newspaper on the previous hearing and he asserted that it was inaccurate and highly prejudicial to his client.
Trotman was advised by the Chief Magistrate that the matter be followed up with the newspaper.
The attorney later called the mother of Narine, Susheila Narine, to testify on behalf of her son. She was then subjected to cross-examination by Inspector Jeffers.
Subsequent to her cross-examination, Trotman indicated that they intended to subpoena two witness if the matter was sent to the High Court.
Chief Magistrate McLennan later informed the men that they were committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes. They will remain on remand until that time.
