The management of The Guyana Annual is appealing to artists to make submissions for its 2018 edition, as the closing date for its competitions draws near.
The magazine in September launched its contests in 11 categories, however, yesterday, Shamshun Mohammed, Manager of the Guyana Annual production, related that submissions for the competitions have been “trickling in.”
She described the response so far as being lukewarm, but said the production team remains optimistic that artists in the various categories will heed the call for entries.
She noted that there have only been responses in the poetry and short story categories, and that there has been particular interest expressed in the oil and gas essay competition, but made a special appeal for those involved in the areas of drama, art, photography, cartooning and journalism to apply.
Mohammed also called on teachers to encourage their students to make submissions.
The 2018 edition includes contests in the categories of: Open Short Story, Junior Short Story, Open Poetry, Junior Poetry, Short Stories for Children, Photography, Fine Arts, Journalism, Cartooning and Drama. There is also an Oil and Gas Essay competition.

The junior categories are open to children aged 9 to 15 years old, while entries for the open categories are welcomed from anyone 16 years old and above.
Prizes range from $20,000 (third place) to $40,000 (first place) in most categories, with the Oil and Gas Essay competition awarding $250,000 for first place.
The deadline for entries is November 30.
The Guyana Annual, a literary magazine, was launched in 1916. The 2018 edition will be available next February.
