Despite failing in their quest to return with medals from the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships, the five young local teen riders would have gained valuable experience and exposure following the event this past weekend in Barbados.
On Saturday, when the time trials were held, juvenile cyclist, Jonathan Ramsuchit was Guyana’s highest finisher, placing sixth in a time of 17m:06.33s for the one-lap (10.1km) event.
His fellow countryman, David Hicks did not start in the event which was won by Trinidad and Tobago’s Enrique De Comarmo (14:08.35s). Bermuda’s Nicholas Garraway (15:07.08s) and Rene Gayral (15:37.37s) of Antigua and Barbuda filled out the podium spots.
In the junior category which was contested for two laps, Guyana’s Curtis Dey (31:08.85s) and Briton John (33:19.95s) placed eighth and 12th in that order out of 16 riders. The top three junior time trial riders were Bermuda’s Matthew Olivieira (28:00.53s) and the Bajan duo of Jacob Kelly (29:16.52s) and Kyle Gill (30:13.97s).
Road Race
On day two, Guyana had two starters in the seven-lap junior category (Dey and Nigel Duguid) and two (Ramsuchit and Hicks) in the juvenile six-lap race.
However, Dey and Ramsuchit were the only locals completing the gruelling events. Dey finished ninth of the 13 finishers while Ramsuchit ended the race 11 and a half minutes after first place finisher, De Comarmo.
The young wheelsmen will look to build on their valuable experiences gained while in the Land of the Flying Fish.
