The policeman who allegedly struck and killed pedestrian Anastacia Kerr along the Ogle Public Road almost two months ago is expected to face 12 charges today, including causing her death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence.
Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force Shivpersaud Bacchus told Stabroek News that the police have received legal advice in the matter and recommendations were made for the lance corporal to be charged.
Among the other charges the rank will face is driving an uninsured vehicle.
Kerr, 20, a sales girl of Lot 5 Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara, died on September 17 after she was struck down while attempting to cross the Ogle Public Road.
The lance corporal, who is attached to the police force’s headquarters and hails from Cummings Lodge, was placed under close arrest following the accident.
At the time, he was driving his personal vehicle, PSS 3984.
The police, in a press release, had said that investigations revealed that the lance corporal was proceeding east along the southern side of the northern carriageway of the public road when the woman ran across the road and into the path of the vehicle.
After she was struck, she was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she died while receiving medical attention.
The police had said that while the rank was proceeding within the stipulated speed limit at the time of the accident, he was found to be above the legal alcohol limit.
Simona Persaud, Kerr’s mother, had related to this newspaper that she learnt of the accident via the news on the following evening.
Persaud said Kerr had just paid for a birthday cake she had ordered for her daughter and was heading to Hope, where her partner lives, when the accident occurred.
