Tournament favourite the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will oppose Kuru-Kururu Warriors while Pele will tackle Grove Hi-Tech when the Turbo Energy Drink Knockout Football Championships quarterfinal round commences today at the Ministry of Education ground.
The opening fixture at 18:30hrs will witness a David versus Goliath scenario when the lawmen take aim at the Warriors. The officers have been in clinical form, following a 6-0 win over Eagles in their tournament opener.
Rawle Haynes is the leading scorer for the talented unit with three goals while Junior Gordon, Travis Jones and Kester Dundas have each netted once.
On the other hand, Kuru-Kururu earned their berth to the ‘elite eight’ section compliments of a 2-0 upset win over Uitvlugt.
Although Police will prove to be a sterner test, the Warriors will look to the duo of Cordel Johnson and Omarion Savoury, scorers in the previous fixture, to fire them to victory.
Meanwhile, the feature affair promises to be a high scoring contest when traditional giant Pele faces off with East Bank of Demerara heavyweight Grove Hi-Tech at 21:00hrs.
Grove Hi-Tech overcame Santos 5-3 in their opening clash. The win was orchestrated by doubles from Joel Dick and Domini Garnett with Lloyd Matthews finding the back of the net once.
If they are to progress to semi-final stage, another efficient showing in the final third will be required, aided by an improved defensive showing.
On the other side, Pele punched their ticket to the quarterfinal section, following a 2-1 win over Northern Rangers via goals from Darshan Persaud and Akosi Jarvis.
The Georgetown unit, who are in a transition process, will look to the returning Gregory Richardson, Travis Grant and Jamal Cozier, to help provide the experience to vanquish their foe.
The final two quarterfinal matches will be staged at the same location next Wednesday.
The first fixture will pit Pouderoyen against Mahaica Determinators at 18:30hrs, while Silver Shattas of Linden will lock horns with Camptown from 21:00hrs.
The other teams that have been eliminated from the championship are Eagles, Northern Rangers, GFC, Santos, Uitvlugt and Riddim Squad.
Winner of the event will receive $500,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $250,000 and the corresponding accolade while the third and fourth place finishers will collect $125,000 and $75,000 apiece and the respective trophy.
