A cashier/receptionist who was employed at the Woodlands Hospital and a security guard were today charged with stealing a little over $1 million from the institution.
It is alleged that Susan Daniels and Haniff Peters on August 31, at the Woodlands Hospital, on Carmichael Street, stole $1,042,195, which was the property of the hospital.
Daniels, 33 of 16 North Section Canal Number 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara and Peters, 32, of 71 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, denied the charge.
Daniels was then read a second charge, which stated that on September 1, at Brickdam Police Station, she gave false information to the police that she was robbed on August 31, which caused the police to conduct an investigation.
Daniels pleaded not guilty to this charge as well
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, Daniels was taking the day’s earnings to a particular location but never got there. He added that Daniels later reported that she was robbed.
However, investigations later revealed that the statement was not true, resulting in the arrest of both her and Peters.
Mansfield made no objection to bail being granted to either of the defendants.
Magistrate Judy Latchman, who presided over the arraignment, later granted Daniels her release on a total of $200,000 bail, representing $100,000 on each charge. Peters was also granted his release on $100,000 bail.
The matters were then adjourned until December 4.
