The quarterfinal round in the inaugural ‘Turbo Energy Drink Football Championship’, will commence today at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
In the opening fixture at 18:30hrs, tourney favourite, the Guyana Police Force (GPF), will take aim at the Soesdyke Highway-based Kuru-Kururu Warriors.
The lawmen stormed their way into the elite eight section, compliments of a comprehensive 5-0 drubbing of West Demerara unit Eagles FC while the Warriors recorded one of the major upsets in the event to earn a quarterfinal berth, following a 2-0 win over West Demerara powerhouse Uitvlugt.
Meanwhile, the feature contest promises to be a high scoring affair when Pele matches skills with East Bank Demerara unit Grove Hi-Tech from 21:00hrs.
The Georgetown giant earned their place in the quarterfinal round after defeating Kitty-based Northern Rangers by a 2-1 score while Grove Hi-Tech battled past Santos 5-3 in their round of 16 clash. The event will resume on Thursday at the same venue with the final two quarterfinal fixtures.
At 18:30hrs, Pouderoyen will lock horns with Mahaica Determinators, while the feature contest will pit Silver Shattas of Linden, against Campbellville giant Camptown from 21:00hrs.
Winner of the event will receive $500,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $250,000 and the corresponding accolade while the third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $125,000 and $75,000 apiece and the respective trophy.
The teams that have been eliminated from the championship are Eagles, Northern Rangers, GFC, Santos, Uitvlugt and Riddim Squad. The event is coordinated by the Petra Organization.
