Following months of uncertainty the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Season Three will commence on Sunday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
The 10-team event will feature six new teams. Western Tigers, Cougars FC, New Amsterdam (NA) United, Ann’s Grove, Den Amstel and Milerock FC, join the quartet of Fruta Conquerors, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Buxton United and Victoria Kings.
In the opening matchup, Fruta Conquerors will oppose NA United at 17:30hrs while Western Tigers will face off with GDF from 20:00hrs. Prior to the start of the fixtures, an opening ceremony at 15:00hrs will be staged.
According to a release from the GFF, Ian Alves, Director of GFF Competitions stated, “This time around the league is more player-centered than ever before. As a result, the players’ match fees have been increased. Players will be provided with an accreditation (pass) that allows them and one other, entry into any elite league match venue whether playing or not on the day.
He added, “It also allows them entry to all GFF-hosted international matches. Additionally, meals will be provided on match day for each player and coaching staff for the clubs participating on that day. Clubs have also been asked to insure their players, a process with which the GFF has facilitated with the insurance provider.
“In return, players have been asked to bring their best game on each match day in order to make the league attractive to the fans. We therefore urge club supporters and football fans in general to come out and experience Guyana’s highest level of football as we continue to grow and develop the league towards self-sustenance in the near future,” Alves stated.
Winner of the event will pocket $5,000,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finisher will pocket $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 and the respective accolade.
On the individual side, prizes will be awarded for the Golden Boot, Golden Glove and Most Valuable Player (MVP).
