Kobras and Nets will battle for the final Georgetown playoff berth in the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) ‘Road to Mecca’ Championship, followings wins over University of Guyana (UG) Trojans and Pepsi Sonics respectively on Saturday.
Kobras downed UG Trojans 56-50. Travis Burnett led the way with 18 points, while Jermaine Slater, Mark Richards and Carlos Edwards added nine, eighth and eighth points respectively.
Chipping in with five points was Kevin Evans. For UG Trojans, Kadeem Peterkin top scored with 16 points while Akeem Kanhai, Darrol Williams and Quincy Easton scored 10, seven and five points each.
Meanwhile, Nets crushed Pepsi Sonics 79-56 in the ‘Mandela Avenue’ derby. Hodiah Stewart and Darion Lewis top scored for the victor with 15 points each.
The next best scorer was Antwoine Austin with 14 points while Mortimer Robertson and Michael Richards had nine points each and Shaquille Emptage eight.
For Pepsi Sonics, Aubrey Austin recorded a game high 17 points, while the duo of Trevor Smith and Junior Lovell contributed 13 and 11 points respectively.
Joel Schultz and Lasana Lewis chipped in with five points each. Up to press time the team teams were battling for the remaining berth at the same venue.
At the moment, Ravens, Colts, Pacesetters and Plaisance Guardians are the automatic qualifiers for the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA).
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) and the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) are yet to finalize their representatives.
The main tournament will official commence on December 1st, with the final penciled for December 23rd. The other playing dates are December 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 13th and 22nd.
Ten teams will be divided into two groups of five, with the best two finishers from each pool, advancing to the semifinal section.The winners of the semifinal round will then advance to the championship game. A best of three format, will be utilized to decide the eventual champion.
