Fruta Conquerors defeated New Amsterdam (NA) United while holders Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Western Tigers battled to a stalemate when Season III of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) ‘Elite League’ commenced on Sunday.
Fruta Conquerors, winner of the recently concluded ‘Big Four Championship’, secured the hard-fought win compliments of an Eon Alleyne strike at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
The versatile Alleyne fashioned the winner in the 78th minute, racing past the defensive line to latch onto a through pass, before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into the empty net.
With the win, Fruta Conquerors leads the standings with three points while NA United is without a point.
Meanwhile, the defending champions GDF played to a 1-1 draw with Western Tigers.
The officers took the lead in the 13th minute when Carlos Adams slotted home on the right side, after the opposing goalkeeper dropped the ball following a collision.
However, Western Tigers levelled proceedings in the 27th minute through Andrew Murray Jr., who directed his header across the body of the goalkeeper into the left corner from a left side cross from Dwayne Daniels.
Both teams walked away win a deserved point. The event resumes on Friday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden.
In the opening fixture at 18:00rs, Buxton United will oppose Ann’s Grove, while at 20:00hrs, Victoria Kings will battle Milerock.
