Narinie Gopaul, the sales clerk who was allegedly mutilated a week ago by a man whose advances she had rebuffed, is no longer in intensive care at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Commander of ‘D’ Division Leslie James told Stabroek News that the woman was removed from the unit as her condition has improved.
Gopaul, also known as ‘Sangeeta,’ 23, of Met-en-Meerzorg, West Coast Demerara, was chopped about her body around 11 pm last Sunday after she had refused advances made towards her by her attacker, Samuel Williams.
The police, in a statement, had said that they had previously shared a relationship.
The attack occurred as was Gopaul was entering her yard, after returning home from work. Gopaul sustained chop wounds to her arms, foot and neck and two of her fingers from her right hand were severed.
She was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she remains a patient.
Williams was apprehended by the police on the night of the attack.
He was charged last Wednesday with unlawfully wounding Gopaul.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until January 9, 2018.
